Flicks from Europe
AFTER a successful run last year, the European Union in Malaysia and Golden Screen Cinemas (GSC) have teamed up to present European Union Film Festival. This is the 6th European Union Film Festival and the second time GSC is lending its venues to the festival. For previous years, the festival was held at the HELP Institute.
The festival is showcased at three GSC venues – GSC Mid Valley, KL, GSC 1 Utama (Petaling Jaya) and GSC Gurney Plaza, Penang. The 25 movies from 16 European Union countries will be playing at both GSC Mid Valley and 1 Utama from Nov 24 to Nov 30. From Dec 2 to Dec 8, the films will travel up north to play at GSC Gurney Plaza.
Kate Owen, British Council’s director of Culture, Science & Society, said at a the festival’s press conference: “Each embassy has submitted films that they think best represent their country.”
Top off that list are Girl with the Pearl Earring (from Britain starring Colin Firth, Scarlett Johannson and Tom Wilkinson), The Others directed by Alejandro Amenabar starring Nicole Kidman, 25 Degrees in Winter from Belgium, Finland’s One Way Ticket to Mombasa and Germany’s Kebab Connection. For those who have never seen the famed Giuseppe Tornatore’s Nuovo Cinema Paradiso on the big screen, well this is your chance. The film details a filmmaker recalling his childhood when he fell in love with movies. It won the Oscar for Best Foreign Language Film in 1990. Although it is an oldie, it is still a goldie.
