Europe: Hopes for spending invigorate bourses

European stocks rose Thursday after profit at Ericssons mobile phone venture tripled in the first quarter and Carrefours sales increased, reviving confidence that consumer spending would underpin earnings growth.

Growth seems to be picking up, said Dirk Thiels, head of equity funds at KBC Asset Management in Brussels. We are somewhat more optimistic on European shares.

The Dow Jones Stoxx 600 index added 1.28 points to 334.36. The Stoxx 50 gained 12.69 to 3,518.66 and the Euro Stoxx 50, an index for the 12 countries using the euro, rose 3 points to 3,779.94.

Europe bourses may rethink growth

Europe bourses may rethink growth The departure of Eurex AG's chief executive after a US expansion flop caps a dismal year for the growth ambitions of Europe's big securities exchanges, signalling a strategic rethink is required. Analysts suggest that cooperation, rather than confrontation, could be the order of the day in 2006 after plans for takeover bids for the London Stock Exchange stalled or failed in 2005. Euronext and Deutsche Boerse will need to clarify growth strategies as competition intensifies and the ability of European players to steal liquidity from elsewhere is thrown into doubt - as Eurex's US experience underlines. Europe: Bourses fall on fears of profit slowdown

Europe: Bourses fall on fears of profit slowdown European stocks fell Tuesday after oil climbed to a record, stoking concern that a slowdown in earnings growth will worsen. Input costs are rising significantly and that will place pressure on companies profit margins. The Dow Jones Stoxx 600 index slipped 0.32 points to 334.04, though energy companies and mining stocks limited its losses. The Stoxx 50 fell 5.04 points to 3,513.62, and the Euro Stoxx

Els Aids Europes Major Hopes Ernie Els has been a supporter of the European tour ever since he signed up as a member back in 1992 aged just 22. Now the South African star believes he is doing something which might help European golfers become major champions like him. At least, he hopes they see it that way. Wentworth hosts the BMW Championship - until last year the PGA Championship - for the 23rd successive time later this month, but it will be a very different West Course to the one on which Colin Montgomerie won the title three years in a row

Wigans European hopes take dive

Wigans European hopes take dive Steed Malbranques fifth goal of the season saw Fulham climb two places to 14th and guarantee their Premiership status, as Wigan Athletics outside hopes of a Uefa Cup place suffered a setback. Fulhams impressive home record continued with an unimpressive display against Wigan, who outplayed the home team for virtually all of the first-half but paid for a lapse in concentration seconds before the interval. Fulham manager Chris Coleman was not concerned that his side were fortunate to collect all three points. I couldnt give a monkeys if we were lucky, he said, at this stage of the
