Rice to visit Europe – and maybe beyond
Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice will start a trip to Europe on Monday but her apparently light schedule raises the possibility she could add a surprise stop in the Middle East such as Iraq.
Rice has announced she will visit Greece, Turkey and Bulgaria on a Monday-to-Friday trip although she has given few details about her itinerary.
A five-day trip to three countries which are near each other would be gentle traveling for the hard-charging globe-trotter who has visited up to four nations in a day.
Determined to use the element of surprise to counter possible attacks against her in the Middle East, Rice has kept some plans secret, including stops in Baghdad and Beirut in the last three months.

Rice Defends Terror Tactics Before Europe Trip
US Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice said every EU government had the right to prevent terrorist attacks ahead of a trip to Europe that will be dominated by allegations of CIA impropriety.
Last week, Rice promised to reply to European officials concerned over reports that the CIA used several European airports and secret jails to transport and detain terrorist suspects.
Shortly before taking off from Andrews Air Force base for a European tour that includes stops in Germany, Romania Ukraine and Brussels, Rice said it was "up to those governments and their citizens to decide
Europe warns on rice imports from U.S.
BRUSSELS The European Union said Thursday that it would reinforce controls on U.S. long-grain rice imports, after Dutch officials found an unauthorized genetically modified variety in shipments that arrived in the port of Rotterdam last month.
Philip Tod, a European Commission spokesman, said the EU executive body had alerted officials in Britain, France and Germany that some of the genetically modified long-grain rice might have entered their markets.
He said that the imports of long-grain rice were certified as genetically unmanipulated. Yet spot checks by Dutch officials found traces of Liberty Link Rice
Rice Woos Europe's Politicians But Public Remains Skeptical
US Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice wrapped up a European trip on Thursday having reassured her European counterparts about the secret CIA prison row but failing to convince much of the public.
As she travelled from Berlin to Bucharest, then Kiev and finally Brussels, Rice honed her response to allegations that the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) had flown "prisoners" in the US war on terror through European airspace.
In Ukraine, she insisted Washington's obligations under an international convention prohibiting cruel, inhuman or degrading treatment "extend to US personnel wherever they are, whether they are in
Europe skeptical of U.S. assurances
BERLIN - Despite her repeated assurances this week that the United States does not torture terrorist suspects, Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice failed to convince European public opinion and, if anything, her visit may have added to the controversy.
The pro-Greens newspaper Tageszeitung ran a fake CIA recruitment ad yesterday underscoring the skepticism in Germany and much of Europe: "Torturers Wanted. U.S. citizens may not apply."
The problem, said European commentators, is that the new U.S. policy need not apply to foreigners interrogating suspects on the CIA's behalf.

Europe Agrees on Funding as Hamas Calls Threats Blackmail
Europe, along with the United States and Russia, agreed Tuesday to continue critical funding to Palestinians but warned election victors Hamas that its future government must give up violence and recognize Israel.
Hamas leader Khaled Meshaal, however, derided US and European threats to put financial pressure on his Islamist group as being "in vain", saying they amounted to forcing it to abandon its struggle for freedom.
