GM Europe seeks nearly 1,000 British job cuts

General Motors Europe (GM.N: Quote, Profile, Research) has proposed cutting nearly 1,000 jobs this year at its Ellesmere Port plant in Britain to improve productivity for the Opel/Vauxhall Astra model, GME President Carl-Peter Forster said on Wednesday.

He said the carmaker was negotiating with labour representatives who wanted to spread production cuts over other GM plants in Europe that make the Astra compact, but that the idea was not super-attractive.

This just delays a real solution, he said on the sidelines of a ceremony opening GM Europes design centre.

He declined to give an exact timetable for making a decision, saying only, We won’t debate this for weeks.

Plants at Antwerp, Belgium, and Bochum, Germany, also build the Astra, which was GMs best-selling vehicle in Europe last year but typically sees sales decline as the model ages.

Foreign Ministry spokesman Hamid Reza Asefi said the talks with Europe should be logical, in the framework of international regulations and without any discrimination against Iran. He said Iran had not received an official proposal for European negotiations, nor had it heard from Russia about

British doctors are Europe’s richest

British doctors are Europe’s richest BRITISH doctors now earn more than their counterparts on the Continent, according to a new study. It has revealed that hospital consultants’ salaries increased by more than 30% between 2000 and 2004. British consultants and GPs are now better off than medical specialists in France, Germany and Denmark. Despite the increases, consultants are asking for a pay rise of 4.5% — almost twice the rate of inflation. Their average annual earnings exceeded £94,000 in 2004. These pay increases were accelerated after consultants agreed changes to their National Health Service contracts two years ago in return for
