Europe has cathedrals; we have eateries, cinemas, neon

Some day the sign at Top Hat Liquors in St. Matthews may be part of a preservation fight. At least I hope thats what happens, if its ever in the path of a wrecking ball.

I think the chic yellow and red neon gestures above the liquor store constitute a handsome piece of art. Some day some utilitarian will want to take it down, and I hope somebody else objects. Im biased. I love good neon.
If any of you know a particularly fine example around here that I shouldnt miss, let me know.

There was a time when I thought my neon obsession was freaky. Like, when I visited San Diego and fell in love with Fat City restaurant, a deco monument outlined in a mile of pink and blue glow. I was so taken with the place that I sent for an 8-by-10 color photo, suitable for framing.
