UK Conservatives to withdraw from Europe alliance

David Cameron, leader of Britains opposition Conservatives, on Thursday announced plans to withdraw his party from the main centre-right grouping in the European Parliament but admitted this would not happen before 2009.

The compromise move aimed at overcoming sharp Conservative divisions over Europe followed prolonged attempts by Mr Cameron to find sufficient credible allies to form an alternative non-federalist group to the European Peoples party.

Mr Cameron insisted he was fulfilling the pledge to withdraw from the EPP that he made during his successful Conservative leadership campaign last year. However, the compromise came under fire from pro-European and eurosceptic Tory MPs but the main groups on both wings signalled they would not openly rebel against it.

The decision to delay until after the next European Parliament elections in 2009 was in effect forced on the Tories by their principal ally, the Czech Civic Democrats.

Europe to Kerkorian: Spare us merger talk European commentators are uniformly trashing the idea of General Motors Corp. joining the Renault-Nissan alliance. That notion was advanced last week by GMs top shareholder, Kirk Kerkorian, in what has been widely perceived as a vote of no confidence in GM chief executive Rick Wagoner, the Detroit News reported Wednesday. The British newspaper Financial Times says Kerkorian has spent about $1.6 billion buying 9.9 percent of GM and has not seen any appreciable increase in that investments value. Kerkorian is a wily old fox who doesnt care about anything but the next value-creating move, and we
