Blair defends Europe budget deal Tony Blair says an EU budget deal which will see £1bn a year cut from the UK's rebate is an "investment in the future prosperity" of eastern Europe. Europe warns on rice imports from U.S. BRUSSELS The European Union said Thursday that it would reinforce controls on U.S. long-grain rice imports, after Dutch officials found an unauthorized genetically modified variety in shipments that arrived in the port of Rotterdam last month. Philip Tod, a European Commission spokesman, said the EU executive body had alerted officials in Britain, France and Germany that some of the genetically modified long-grain rice might have entered their markets. Europes first trip to Moon ends with welcome bump It was the slowest and possibly the cheapest trip to the Moon, yet Europes first lunar mission has ended as planned with a spectacular crash landing. The Smart-1 spacecraft had been carefully manoeuvred so that yesterday at 6.42am it would hit the lunar surface at a speed of about 4,500mph in a region of the Moon known as the Lake of Excellence.
