Rice Defends Terror Tactics Before Europe Trip

US Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice said every EU government had the right to prevent terrorist attacks ahead of a trip to Europe that will be dominated by allegations of CIA impropriety.

Last week, Rice promised to reply to European officials concerned over reports that the CIA used several European airports and secret jails to transport and detain terrorist suspects.

Shortly before taking off from Andrews Air Force base for a European tour that includes stops in Germany, Romania Ukraine and Brussels, Rice said it was “up to those governments and their citizens to decide if they wish to work with us to prevent terrorist attacks in their own country or other countries.

Rice to visit Europe – and maybe beyond

Rice to visit Europe -- and maybe beyond Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice will start a trip to Europe on Monday but her apparently light schedule raises the possibility she could add a surprise stop in the Middle East such as Iraq. Rice has announced she will visit Greece, Turkey and Bulgaria on a Monday-to-Friday trip although she has given few details about her itinerary. A five-day trip to three countries which are near each other would be gentle traveling for the hard-charging globe-trotter who has visited up to four nations in a day. Rice Woos Europe’s Politicians But Public Remains Skeptical

Rice Woos Europe's Politicians But Public Remains Skeptical US Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice wrapped up a European trip on Thursday having reassured her European counterparts about the secret CIA prison row but failing to convince much of the public. As she travelled from Berlin to Bucharest, then Kiev and finally Brussels, Rice honed her response to allegations that the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) had flown "prisoners" in the US war on terror through European airspace. In Ukraine, she insisted Washington's obligations under an international convention prohibiting cruel, inhuman or degrading treatment "extend to US personnel wherever they are, whether they are in

Blair defends Europe budget deal

Blair defends Europe budget deal Tony Blair says an EU budget deal which will see £1bn a year cut from the UK's rebate is an "investment in the future prosperity" of eastern Europe. The deal, reached in Brussels early on Saturday, includes an EU commitment to review farm spending in 2008. But Tory leader David Cameron said Mr Blair had failed "in every single one" of his objectives in the EU budget negotiations. Charles Kennedy said the outcome of the summit was disappointing. More:

Europe warns on rice imports from U.S.

Europe warns on rice imports from U.S. BRUSSELS The European Union said Thursday that it would reinforce controls on U.S. long-grain rice imports, after Dutch officials found an unauthorized genetically modified variety in shipments that arrived in the port of Rotterdam last month. Philip Tod, a European Commission spokesman, said the EU executive body had alerted officials in Britain, France and Germany that some of the genetically modified long-grain rice might have entered their markets. He said that the imports of long-grain rice were certified as genetically unmanipulated. Yet spot checks by Dutch officials found traces of Liberty Link Rice

Europes first trip to Moon ends with welcome bump

Europes first trip to Moon ends with welcome bump It was the slowest and possibly the cheapest trip to the Moon, yet Europes first lunar mission has ended as planned with a spectacular crash landing. The Smart-1 spacecraft had been carefully manoeuvred so that yesterday at 6.42am it would hit the lunar surface at a speed of about 4,500mph in a region of the Moon known as the Lake of Excellence. Scientists at the European Space Agencys operations centre in Darmstadt, Germany, pronounced the crash landing a complete success and said the impact would help to reveal the origins of the Moon
