Europe warns on rice imports from U.S.

BRUSSELS The European Union said Thursday that it would reinforce controls on U.S. long-grain rice imports, after Dutch officials found an unauthorized genetically modified variety in shipments that arrived in the port of Rotterdam last month.

Philip Tod, a European Commission spokesman, said the EU executive body had alerted officials in Britain, France and Germany that some of the genetically modified long-grain rice might have entered their markets.

He said that the imports of long-grain rice were certified as genetically unmanipulated. Yet spot checks by Dutch officials found traces of Liberty Link Rice 601, a genetically modified variety developed by Bayer CropScience in the United States, he said.

Rice Defends Terror Tactics Before Europe Trip

Rice Defends Terror Tactics Before Europe Trip US Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice said every EU government had the right to prevent terrorist attacks ahead of a trip to Europe that will be dominated by allegations of CIA impropriety. Last week, Rice promised to reply to European officials concerned over reports that the CIA used several European airports and secret jails to transport and detain terrorist suspects. Shortly before taking off from Andrews Air Force base for a European tour that includes stops in Germany, Romania Ukraine and Brussels, Rice said it was "up to those governments and their citizens to decide

Rice to visit Europe – and maybe beyond

Rice to visit Europe -- and maybe beyond Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice will start a trip to Europe on Monday but her apparently light schedule raises the possibility she could add a surprise stop in the Middle East such as Iraq. Rice has announced she will visit Greece, Turkey and Bulgaria on a Monday-to-Friday trip although she has given few details about her itinerary. A five-day trip to three countries which are near each other would be gentle traveling for the hard-charging globe-trotter who has visited up to four nations in a day. Determined to use the element of surprise to counter possible

Rice Woos Europe’s Politicians But Public Remains Skeptical

Rice Woos Europe's Politicians But Public Remains Skeptical US Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice wrapped up a European trip on Thursday having reassured her European counterparts about the secret CIA prison row but failing to convince much of the public. As she travelled from Berlin to Bucharest, then Kiev and finally Brussels, Rice honed her response to allegations that the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) had flown "prisoners" in the US war on terror through European airspace. In Ukraine, she insisted Washington's obligations under an international convention prohibiting cruel, inhuman or degrading treatment "extend to US personnel wherever they are, whether they are in

Europe on alert over bird flu pandemic

Europe on alert over bird flu pandemic Health experts across Europe are on alert, anxiously monitoring human bird flu to see if efforts to contain the virus can stop it spreading to the European Union. Confirmed cases of the deadly H5N1 strain in three people living near Turkey's capital Ankara, and more suspected cases in eastern Turkey, prompted EU experts to widen an existing ban on imports and to review existing EU-level surveillance efforts. But a European Commission spokesman emphasised yesterday that there was still no evidence that the virus had become transmissible directly between humans. The EU banned imports of live

Poland Warns Europe on Gas

Poland Warns Europe on Gas Europe urgently needs to reduce its dependence on Russian energy because the country has proved itself an unreliable partner, Polish Economy Minister Piotr Wozniak said Friday. The diversification is very important, and not only for Poland, Wozniak said in an interview at a conference in Warsaw. Regardless of all declarations, manifestations and cooperation agreements, we experienced three weeks of gas shortages in the middle of a hard winter. More : themoscowtimes.com
